In a recent press conference, the governor of the State Bank of Pakistan, Dr Shamshad Akhtar, said that increased borrowing by the government had resulted in inflation. Blaming the government for borrowing more money from the central bank does not absolve the State Bank of its prime responsibility of ensuring monetary control. Why didn’t they have the courage to take a principled stand and refuse to lend to the government beyond a certain limit?
