Karachi generates 8,000 tons of garbage everyday. The city administration should realise that this garbage (organic waste) can be converted into organic fertiliser. Our farmland is getting less fertile with the use of unnatural pesticides. The use of inorganic fertiliser is harmful for soil, environment and consumers. It has also been proven that organic fertilizers are much better than inorganic fertilizers. In this regard, research work has identified microorganisms, which convert organic waste into organic fertilizers.
The process of conversion takes place slowly and completes in six months under natural conditions. The cost of creating a bio-converter facility for organic waste may be initially higher as compared with the output but in the long run it would be immensely profitable. The use of organic fertilizers in farmlands will boost food production. This will also be beneficial for citizens of Karachi because solid waste blocks sewage system and cause air and water pollution.
The department of agricultural at the University of Karachi can make a feasibility report if provided with necessary facilities. The government must initiate a project to save Karachi’s environment and provide the farmers of upcountry with cheap, environment-friendly and organic fertilizers.
