After 9/11, a wide gulf has been created between the West and Muslim world due to the poisonous propaganda aimed at declaring Muslims terrorists. Un fortunately, the Muslim world, instead of disseminating true message of Quranic and Madrrassah education, chose to remain silent. This is the era of media war where once point of view is considered the guide line of the state. Small wonder, if I say that more than 80% dramas being shown on different channels revolve around LOVE theme, and carry content that is not suitable for family viewing. However, many PTV presentations are marvelous due to their sublime production and message.
Rauf Khalid is among few directors who boosted the image of the PTV, producing memorable dramas such as Guest House, Laag, Angar Vaddi etc. Khalid is highly rated for focusing on issue oriented subjects rather formula ones. Now his current serial ‘Mishaal’ is being shown on PTV and earning wide appreciation.
The director’s main focus in Mishall is education given in Madrassahs, which the West/America considers terrorists producing factories. According to writer/director, there are different branches of education like Science, Arts, Technical education as well as Religious education. Arts institutions mostly focus on art subjects, while Madrassah’s main focus is Quran and Hadith. So why this blame game by the West. The objective of Madrassah students is to gain religious knowledge, but some short sighted people and communities see them as terrorists. It is this question that Khalid raises. He unfolds the reasons of anger of Muslim world toward those maligning the name of Islam. The drama serial has touched upon the theme of mysticism as a tool to control anger and remain peaceful. In one scene, a sufi cleans sewage with his own hands, setting a noble example for others.
In short, ‘Mishaal’ touches upon a number of social and national issues and also teaches the masses the doctrine: ‘live and let live’. Rauf Khalid has attached hope to this serial as he thinks that it is high time that we responded to Western propaganda against Islam.
