Asif Ali Zardari’s occasional remarks against the president and his convoluted constitutional package for the restoration of the deposed judges notwithstanding, I have a strong feeling that as long as he is at the helm of political affairs the president is not going to be impeached. The reason is that he is in Pakistan only because America helped him broker a ‘deal’ with the president under the garb of the National Reconciliation Ordinance.
It is important to note that the NRO was stayed by Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry while the post-November 3 Supreme Court under Justice Dogar accepted it. It is anybody’s guess as to who Mr Zardari would like to see as the chief justice of Pakistan. It seems that we may soon have a new ‘secret weapon’ of the establishment to replace Maulana Fazlur Rahman.
