After the tragic killing of PPP Chairperson Benazir Bhutto, no one in the party can match her charisma, not even his son Bilawal. His succession as chairperson of the PPP appears to be an undemocratic step even to many senior party leaders.
Secondly, while Bilawal will remain at Oxford during the next four years to complete his education, Asif Ali Zardari may not be acceptable as PPP co-chairman to the majority of the party workers.
Zardari should try to restore people’s confidence in the PPP leadership. To achieve this objective, the PPP should join hands with other national political parties to put up a strong and united political front against its opponents. This should be acceptable to PPP workers because Benazir Bhutto had herself entered into a political alliance with Nawaz Sharif. Zardari should do the same at this critical time.
If his party wins the election, he should convince the party leadership to share power with Nawaz Sharif. Sharif’s recent condolence visit to Bhutto House in Larkana was aimed at inviting the PPP to join hands with the PML-N. Now it’s up to Mr Zardari to response to Nawaz Sharif’s gesture positively by sharing power with him after getting a predictable victory in polls.
