A couple of issues that this land faced reminded one about Frankenstein, a character that tormented his own maker. According to the story, a genius succeeded in forming an animate creature like a man, only to his own torment. Instead of performing useful chores, as visualized, the animate creature became a source of nuisance and trouble for the genius who had fabricated the animated form to carry out his commands. Majority of people were familiar with this story, mostly through a movie by that name. Yet, a few seemed to have learnt any lesson from it. If the people had grasped the morale of the story, they would have refrained from creating Frankensteins, in the shape of one entity or the other, to pursue their hidden agenda. As one would recall, there have been numerous efforts by the vested interests to launch tutored men (under the guise of leaders) and/or political groupings to promote their self-seeking agenda. Since the efforts were designed to promote or perpetuate the interests of a single person or a clique vis-a-viz the entire nation, in almost all cases the scheming individuals had to reap a bitter harvest, ultimately. To refresh the readers' memories, one would briefly narrate a few instances. During the pre-1977 period, a religious-cum-political party (two-in-one) used to sweep elections in a coastal metropolitan city. Without any exception, the legislators of that party were literate, moderate and enlightened, but they were often critical of the Establishment. Following the events of July 1977, the Establishment groomed and launched, on the political horizon, a few individuals and an ethnic grouping so as to dilute the following and power base of the mainstream political parties and also the politico-religious group and its scholarly/seasoned legislators. Due to official patronage, the candidates and the grouping fielded by the Establishment succeeded in getting sufficient votes. However, much to the dismay of the sponsoring agency, the political following, power and influence of the ethnic grouping tremendously increased in major towns of a coastal province and so did the stature of its leader, primarily due to coercive tactics and propaganda. When the power brokers found them to be helpless in controlling the grouping and its leader, they picked-up another person from the ethnic community and launched him as the community's "Haqeeqi" leader. However, the new faction could not muster support of the masses who considered it to be a pseudo body. Rivalry between both the factions created a law and order situation, which impelled the power brokers to revert to the grouping launched by them initially. Thereafter, the power brokers and the ethnic grouping entered into a power-sharing agreement, which remains in force till this day, enabling both to rule in accordance with the terms of the agreement. In Punjpani, the Establishment introduced the scion of an industrial family and gradually elevated him, first as provincial minister, then chief minister and finally as the country's prime minister. After becoming prime minister, the Establishment's nominee became a captive of his own propaganda believing that he was the Quaid, who enjoyed mass support, unparalleled in the country's political history. He wanted his wishes and commands to get supremacy over, what he said, man-made paper documents like the Constitution. When he started overstepping the assigned role, the power brokers ditched him, repeating the exercise twice. Another instance. During the last three decades of the twentieth century, "The Great Game" was at its zenith and the contestants were engaged in it with full vigour, using their prowess and skills to make tactical gains and achieve strategic goals. In the late 1970s, the 'Bears' succeeded in making considerable advances, annexing all territories up to the western borders of the Land of the Pure, which was at that time being ruled by a despot. The champion of the free world, Uncle Sam, wanted to oust the Bear from territories annexed by it. Uncle Sam hatched a scheme. He presented the concept of strategic depth to the power wielders in the Land of the Pure and asked them to motivate the seminary students to pursue Jihad to achieve this goal by ousting the infidel Bear from the territories across the western borders. With political and material support from Uncle Sam, the events unfolded according to the plan. Prolonged stay in the arena and continuous onslaughts by pro-free world contestants made the Bear weary and it retreated to its den, vacating all territories annexed by it. Hitherto docile and peaceful Taliban played a crucial role in the Bear's ouster. However, in the process, the stature, power and the worldly wealth of clerics increased tremendously and ultimately they became a power to reckon with in those regions. The clerics even succeeded in forming their own governments, both across the western borders of the Land of the Pure and in its border regions in coalition with the King's Party. But, the plan went astray this time also as the clerics became unwieldy. Uncle Sam himself ousted them, through a fierce military action, from across Pak Land's western borders. Meanwhile, the Land of the Pure had to reap a bitter harvest, in the shape of 3.5 million refugees and the antecedent rise of "extremism/fundamentalism" coupled with a culture of intolerance, Kalashnikovs, drugs and suicide attacks. Last year, Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa inmates assumed Frankensteinian characteristics, inflicting great torment upon their former patrons, who had to taste bitter fruits this time as well. The episode bewildered the civil society, who failed to believe that right in the centre of the country's capital city, the seminary students could disrupt civic life without official latitude, especially when there existed various state outfits to monitor and curb the unruly or unbecoming behaviour by any group or segment of the society. They pointed out that on the civil side, there was police, special police, Intelligence Bureau; while the forces have outfits called inter-services intelligence, field investigation units in addition to intelligence outfits of each arm of the forces. The citizens were not inclined to accept that any of those agencies was inefficient or weak. All the agencies knew their job well and the citizens had full confidence in their capabilities. In their private conversations, the citizens would declare the episode to have been engineered by the vested interests to strengthen their hold. The show of muscles by the seminary students, however, raised the anxiety of Uncle Sam, who feared any scenario where clerics could assume control of the state power. Therefore, when pressed by the powers that be, the Establishment had to destroy this Frankenstein-like character before it attained more power. In the beginning of this millennium, the Establishment engineered another masterpiece, cobbling together a group comprising of loyal sycophants and some tainted elements. It zealously nourished this grouping, hyped and propped it well before finally styling and launching it as 'Q League,' a grouping queuing-up to league with the establishment. The alphabet 'Q' indicated the number of its efforts in engineering, starting with alphabets 'a', 'b', 'c' and so on. Now, the 'Q' faction faced a test to demonstrate its public standing on February 18. Afraid of the outcome, some elements of the grouping have already changed loyalties. Meanwhile, the Establishment anxiously waited for the results of its upcoming harvest. |
