Karachi is being deprived of its beauty, slowly but surely. This time Kashmir Road, a two-way carriage linking Shahrah-e-Qaideen with Shaheed Millat Road, celebrated for its decades-old lush green palm trees, has been dispossessed of its trees. Karachi has suffered immense loss in the aesthetic and environmental sense. It has been deprived of its mangroves in the name of “development.” The cutting of trees in the city is unpardonable, in both the moral and legal sense of the word.
The authorities must work out an emergency plan to plant grown palm trees on both sides of the road the moment construction work is completed, so that Kashmir Road can be restored of its beauty.
It is essential for us to not only to preserve the trees we have but also to plant more of them, instead of depriving our country of one of nature’s most precious gifts to mankind. People can help in the planting effort. Tree planting is not an activity reserved for the environmentally conscious of the West. It is an easy and sustainable way to improve our environment.
