The French President Nicholas Sarkozy was one of the first foreign heads of state to contact Pervez Musharraf after the assassination of Benazir Bhutto. However, his main message was not condolence, but continued French support to Musharraf in the war on terror, quote "I deeply appreciate your efforts in the war against terrorism and extremism" (ARY One News 27.12.2007).
Sarkozy also directly linked “Islamic terrorists” to the murder ignoring Benazir Bhutto’s own statements and concerns where she clearly named those people she feared most. A couple of days later, Sarkozys Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner did the same during his round-trips in Islamabad and Rawalpindi. The French objective behind his visit was to reinforce French support to Musharraf in the war against “Islamistic” terrorism and extremism. The French minister statements were clearly infavour of the “blame Al-Qaeda” theory, which Musharraf and his administration is adamantly adhering to despite the fact that the majority of Pakistani public and society thinks otherwise.
Sarkozy and most of his Western colleagues are more than eager to praise leaders such as Gaddafi and now Musharraf because these third world leaders better advance the interests of the corrupted Western governments.
In the same breath the French and Western governments are eager to pressurise Islamabad to give up territorial sovereignty and allow Nato unhindered entry into the FATA and Balochistan. The Nato governments are also pressurising Musharraf to give full access to the Pakistani nuclear programme, consequently subjugating and crippling Pakistan’s defence capacity.
I hope that fair elections and a democratic government will resist the NATO attempts to cripple Pakistan’s sovereignty and defence capacity.
