Since 2002 Balochistan has been a target of terrorist activity which includes bomb blasts, rocket fire, blasts in vehicles, mines and suicide bombing. So far hundreds of precious lives have been lost. Those killed include young, old as well as innocent women and children. On December 13, 2007 at 5:05pm two suicide blasts rocked the Pakistan Army checkpost in the Kuchmore locality in Quetta cantonment. The attacks left 13 persons dead, including security forces personnel. This was the fifth suicide attack in the provincial capital. The first suicide blast took place on July 4, 2003 and it was so devastating that 54 persons were killed and dozens others injured. In terms of casualties it was the biggest suicide attack in the history of Pakistan. The second suicide blast took place on March 2, 2004 when on the occasion of Yaum-e-Ashoor a suicide attack took place in Liaquat Bazaar, Quetta. This attack left 51 persons dead. The third suicide attack took place on February 17, 2007 at the districts courts, Quetta which left 16 persons, including senior civil judge Abdul Wahid Durrani and eight lawyers, dead. More than 40 persons sustained injuries in the incident. So far some 133 precious lives have been lost to the suicide attacks in the provincial capital alone. The two attacks at the army checkpost in Quetta on December 13 took place one after the other. Those who were killed in the incident included Hawaldar Muhammad Hussain, soldiers Muhammad Ashiq and Mansha, Lance Naik Muhammad Shahzad and Naseem Abbas. The attack left 22 persons injured including 13 security forces personnel. Those injured include Major Zahanat, Major Usman, Captain Waqas, Mukhtar Asad and Havaldar Bota. The civilians who sustained injuries were Muhammad Amin, Sameer, Abdul Razzaq, Mukhtar Ahmed, Muhammad Hameed, Gulab Khan, Abdul Samad and Ghulam Khan. The blast was so devastating that it damaged three cars, four motorcycles and a dozen cycles. The bomb disposal squad and the security forces reached the scene of the incident immediately and the injured were rushed to the Combined Military Hospital. The face of one of the suicide bombers was completely lost whereas the investigation authorities are in the process of drawing a sketch of the second suicide attacker. The body parts of the suicide attackers are being sent for DNA test. It has been learnt the suicide attackers were on foot. It is important to mention that no one has claimed responsibility of the attack. So far no arrests have been made. Strict security measures have been adopted and all entry and exit routes leading to the area tightly cordoned. According to DIG Operations Rehmatullah Niazi the two suicide bombers were bearded and were in the age bracket of 22 to 25. He said the body samples of two suicide bombers have been sent to the federal capital for DNA tests. Further action will be taken in the light of the report. At the other end target killing of security forces personnel continues all over the province including the provincial capital. During the running week a frontier corps checkpost in Mano Jan area in Quetta came under terrorist firing. One FC man was killed and a Balochistan Constabulary official injured. |
