Top seed Aqeel Khan overwhelmed Asim Shafik in straight sets to capture the men’s singles crown of the Subh-e-Nau National Clay Court Tennis Championship 2007 here at Islamabad Club.
It was Aqeel’s second successive national title, having won the Federal Cup a week ago in Islamabad. Aqeel thrashed Asim 6-0, 6-1, never allowing him to settle down in the one-sided match. The top seed dazzled his opponent with his lightening quick serves and powerful groundstrokes, taking the first set in a blink of an eye.
Asim was looking fatigued and exhausted in the second set and could not muster enough resistance to thwart a charging Aqeel, who broke him twice before wrapping up the set 6-1. Earlier, Aqeel stunned Muhammad Shafik 6-0, 6-1 in the first semifinal, while Asim downed Jalil Khan in a stiff three-set encounter en route to his face-off with Jalil’s elder brother in the final.
Jalil, seeded second, won the first set 6-4, breaking Asim’s serve in the 8th game. However, the third seed levelled the match in the next set by reciprocating the first set scores. Asim held his nerves to the clinch the third set and the match 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Anoosha Aslam came from behind to claim the ladies’ singles title by beating Ushna Sohail 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in a well-contested final. Fahad Ali grabbed the boys’ U-17 crown by defeating M Ahmed Aslam 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. The U-13 title was bagged by Nameer Shamsi, who defeated Kashan-ul-Haq 3-5, 4-1, 4-0.
