Untying the Gordian knot?
June 17, 2011
Very true, an act of an individual should not be considered as an act of an institution and those responsible for any wrongdoing must be brought to justice. We must keep a watch on the juicy stories on Pakistan which are complicating the situation, confusing the masses and widening the gap between security institutions and general masses, but the quarters concerned do have to act swiftly before the enemy takes the advantage of this hazardous. If tragic episodes like Kharotabad, killing of an unarmed youth by the Rangers in Karachi and threats to the media for covering such crimes continued, then one must not be annoyed over public fray, and questioning: ‘Our guards are best at home not at borders’.
Is it wrong to point out the wrongdoings and ill-fated policies of the state which brought blood and terror to our home or if few are turned to be abusive, which they shouldn’t be, losing patience of decades looting in the name of defence what they argue, exposed badly in recent events of OBL operation and later on PNS Mehran base, are surely wrong but doesn’t mean they have bias for them, has security establishment done anything if this criticism is unjustified and against ‘national interest’ a mantra they sung all the time, any noteworthy steps taken which could save us from inhuman drone strikes and deadly blasts which left hundreds of families hapless, and made IDPs.

With the heat still on, security institutions and political leadership are striving to defend themselves before the nation on the US Special Forces covert operation in Abbottabad to kill Al Qaeda supremo Osama bin Laden, brazen terror strikes on PNS Mehran in Karachi, mysterious kidnapping and killing of investigative journalist Saleem Shahzad, unarmed Chechens’ killing in Kharotabad and extrajudicial killing of a youth by Rangers in Karachi.
No doubt, these events have exposed the security and intelligence apparatus but their bashing in the current critical times will amount to turning the people against them and thus dealing a deadly blow to the national interests.
We need to see that the situation is fast changing now. The media must be credited for doing such a stunning job that has brought an ISPR press release which is first time of a different kind, more confusing.
Whatever the scene is, the military has spoken out and asked for aid utilization for the common man’s welfare, but at the same time giving a coded message that a campaign being launched is to distance the public and army with their biased approach towards the security institutions shows frustration over criticism, which is no doubt uncouth and more lethal. It should have been a balanced one though issues are bigger, demanding immediate answers.
May 2011 would ever be kept in our history for its ‘unthinkable’ happenings. The whole episode of deadly events like some Hollywood movie has created chaos and made people frustrated and standstill on government side. Abbottabad Commission is still in the doldrums and nothing substantial has come out in Saleem Shahzad’s mysterious murder which caused finger pointing at the intelligence.
Here are some different prisms to the whole grim situation. Is it wrong to point out the wrongdoings and ill-fated policies of the state which brought blood and terror to our home or if few are turned to be abusive, which they shouldn’t be, losing patience of decades looting in the name of defence what they argue, exposed badly in recent events of OBL operation and later on PNS Mehran base, are surely wrong but doesn’t mean they have bias for them, has security establishment done anything if this criticism is unjustified and against ‘national interest’ a mantra they sung all the time, any noteworthy steps taken which could save us from inhuman drone strikes and deadly blasts which left hundreds of families hapless, and made IDPs, but why army alone is bashed, where are public representatives, sitting in their air-conditioned chambers, issuing just statements, either government or opposition which remained more friendly rather would be good to say in acquiesces to the rulers, responsible equally for this menace for not clarifying the secret agreements with US and inflation genie, and always submitting to army, in its all jobs, otherwise which country, the foreign policy is designed in security corridors or all agreements without government consent, also this is not a valid argument that all these are done by Musharraf but now you are holding the stick, tell the truth and reestablish the pride and honor you had enjoyed, and last but not the least when peace would visit again to this homeland, a billion dollar question, of every common Pakistani.
Questions and just questions are floating everywhere, but no one is there to tell us who would reply us, true and justified. Here are some suggestions, in my humble judgment. Bashing the army alone is not a wise solution, especially in such uncouth and lethal tones, as surely it would widen the gulf between the nation and army. The army too needs to clarify its situation but in that way as it created more confusion than clearing the smoke.
