Though Pakistan Cricket team in recent Cricket World Cup could not lift the trophy but due to its outstanding performance fans showered praiseworthy words. New dimensions of cricket been explored as the latest technology added charm to it. Pakistan’s best achievement was its sublime standard of by Asad Rauf and especially Aleem Dar despite losing Semi Final to India. Luckily Pakistan is among those high rating countries, which have produced high-class cricketers and umpires, bringing laurels to their countries. Nadeem Ghauri is one such umpire whose judgments on LBW, caught behind, run out, stump out and other complicated decisions were widely applauded during the field. That’s the prime reason of his induction in ICC elite panel.
Mohammad Nadeem Ghauri (born October 12, 1962, Lahore is a former Pakistani cricketer who played in one Test and 6 ODIs in 1990.
He had the unfortunate record of scoring neither a run nor taking a wicket in his Test career.
In 2005, Nadeem Ghauri officiated in his first Test as umpire, making his debut at Dhaka in a Test between Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. Five years earlier, he made his debut as a One Day International umpire in his hometown. As of 18 October 2007, Nadeem Ghauri has officiated in five Tests, 32 ODIs and four U19 World Cups respectively 2004, 2006 in Bangladesh, 2008 Malaysia and 2010 New Zealand.
Talking about the standard of umpiring in the world, he says that Pakistani umpires performance is outstanding. Look at the recent World Cup, 15 reviews claimed against Aleem Dar but all turned down in favour of Dar. Same way the Asad Rauf’s performance remained quite satisfactory. Its all due to that Pakistan’s umpiring strong structure that produced such high standard umpires. When asked about the qualities of an umpire, Ghauri categorize following qualities: The umpire should have:
• Acute observation, retentive memory and capacity of judgment
• It should have ample patience to tolerate the players appeals and protests.
• He should have maximum knowledge about the condition and rules of cricket
• He should be brave enough to face the pressure to control the game
When asked about the Review system technology whether it is helpful or pose threat to expose the poor judgment of the umpire? Ghauri strongly supported this system and claimed that now game has gained the heighten the perfection almost to 97%. In the past most of the teams usually blame us that we with the help of umpires we used to win the matches. But during tour to West Indies Imran Khan first time raised voice for nuetral umpiring. The day then standard of the game has improved. He denied Saeed Ajmal’s recent statement that Tendulkar was LBW on his ball but Producer of the OB Van engineered the ball and declared him not out. “No, that is childish imagination since more than 20 cameras are focusing the match. The camera shows every angle so cheating is not possible” Ghauri clarified.
He urged youngsters that since everyone cannot become Javed Miandad or Shahid Afridi so besides cricket they should focus on umpiring courses and make their own and country’s future bright.
Nadeem Ghauri has passed some valuable suggestions to PCB regarding the improvment of its domestic structure. Here are these:
a. First of all cricket schedule is not appropriate as is should start earlier i.e., from August by U_19 tournament. Secondly in my opinion domestic and departmental cricket should be separated as before like Patrons and Quaid-e-Azam trophy. This action should take it avoid below average players those aim is to got labeled as first class cricketers only. Much talent has been washed in this process.
b. Besides this I strongly suggest there should be only one or tow meeting or seminars before seasons which should attended by all the umpires, referees, captains, elite panel umpires where all playing conditions, rules and regulation format discuss in details and all tournament conduct accordingly. There is no need of one day before meeting, Same ICC play8ing conditions are using in Pakistan. We only need to make sure that it should implement properly.
c. Thirdly, I suggest improving the game it is necessary that we should improve the judgment and make it up to the international standard so that player are familiar with that standard. In this respect after one tournament the umpires that are performing well should give more matches and umpires show low standard should be given less matches. This action like in ICC encourages or forces them to maintain and improve their standard. If you have no competition, your spirit of betterment slowed down.
d. This is highly recommended that umpires and referees report after each match should be confidential. PCB should take serious action if it is leak out. It is necessary to reduce burden from umpires and referees.
e. In all the tournament Kookaburra balls should used as there are many complains about low standard balls that are used these days. I would claim that it is just waste of time and money as well.
f. More and more matches should be televising to ensure that it is being watched both by players, officials as well as umpires.
g. As weather conditions during winter are not good or favorable in Punjab rest of season should be played at sindh. So that full day play could be possible and players could get full advantage from the tournament and show their potential and talent thoroughly as next Pakistani team will be selected from these boys.
h. Now comes to the playing condition in our domestic cricket one rule which totally opposite from ICC rule is implemented this is at the start of the match the captain who has lost the toss shall be permitted to select two balls from the supply of cleaned and obtained used balls the other captain then choose which of the two balls he would like his team to bowl with. It should be implemented like above in this way laser of toss could be benefited. In Pakistan we give this opportunity to captain who win the toss.
i. Last of all I would like to draw your attention towards major problems of domestic umpires whose average income is about15 to 20 thousand per month being as a important part of the match is this in your opinion satisfactory ? As judges in all countries are highly paid as their duty requires mental satisfaction how could you expect from an umpire hundred percent who is calculating where to stay and how to spend during the season to save for his living. The season to save for his living. It is highly respectable job and it has earned lot of respect for Pakistan as Aleem Dar we the other umpire could do the same but unfortunately we are the only those have no central contract, no security of jobs but still we are doing our best. We have to arrange accommodation, traveling, food during roaming in different cities.
