Religious extremism has become quite a taboo subject in Pakistan, with some ‘intellectual-oriented’ anchorpersons going out of way with their intermittent propaganda tirade. Some elements have simply made it their staple to raise perpetual hue and cry over the norm on the mini-screen; one small slip of tongue or even most minor of controversial act is enough to set the tongues of these self-styled reformists, spewing all venom and spite. But nay a word have/ do these self styled critics utter regarding the vicious chain cycle of target killings and its quite evident perpetuators. Connivance or/and simple fear of retaliation, and/ or patronizing attitude?

Had there been a slightest hint of religious extremism being a part of Karachi or Baluchistan, the entire National and international media would have erupted ‘in a volatile reaction’, with all crying hoarse over ‘immediate extermination of extremist elements’; while a total silence over the blood and gore being spilled so openly and brazenly, right in the very economic hub of Pakistan’s own soil, does raise suspicions. Nationalists, as opposed to religious elements are being more encouraged, patronized; most often backed and financed by external sources. One shivers while pondering the mystery of all the encouragement being rendered to the actual anti-State elements.

Masses, scared, panicked, grief-stricken are the ultimate victims, the original sufferers, and have nowhere to run or hide. Nowhere to turn to / for solace, resolutions. But the worse criminals are the indifferent, cold-blooded politicians, who are least interested to review the irony, seriousness of the entire situation as such. Rather they have become party to rekindle the already blazing fire of hatred, ethnicity and volatile political activism, which during the past one and a quarter year has devoured more than 1000 precious lives, and terrorist target killers have been holding the entire City as hostages in their bloody clutches. Law has shrunk to its mere 3- word status and limitations, while blind, vicious and untamed power, unleashed, rules unchallenged and un-disturbed.

The most mysterious and irritating factor remains that the actual ferocious tug of war is between none other than three active coalition partners, PPPP, ANP and MQM. The government never tires of announcing an immediate and prompt end to all this vicious chain. A deadline is given with a boisterous bravado and warning, all to no avail. All this goes a long way to prove that this was just another one of those eyewashes to hoodwink already dead and tired masses. The hapless, inept and totally ineffective government itself at odds with the situation has long lost any interest in seriously tackling the deadly issue. Mostly in order to salvage its own rule; as the report of intelligence sources have also highlighted in their reports, that a secret accord has been reached between PPPP and MQM to avoid/ eschew any presenting of arrested killers in front of media, or produce them in anti-terrorist courts but rather in 13d cases, previewed by subordinate courts.

The reports also indicate that during past 3 years, 89 alleged target killers were arrested, out of which only 26 were subjected to joint interrogation; while joint interrogation of 13MQM, one Sipah-e-Muhammad, 6 Lashkar-e-Jahngavi and one ANP activists has been stopped.

The joint investigative committee of federal and Provincial government, comprising of ISI, MI, IB, Special Branch, and Crime investigation unit finalized a list of 26 hard killers, who had committed serial target killings, based on ethnicity and sectarian norms, since past one year. The Provincial home minister has quite often referred to the list, causally, but never in a detailed perspective. One member of the joint investigation team, on the condition of anonymity, informed that these target killers had been arrested red-handed, on informers’ disclosures. Hailing from MQM, these target killers have confessed to killings over orders received from higher command, and were currently in arrest of law enforcement agencies: awaiting their presentation before media sources; but only when and where the government decides. However considering the ongoing process of reconciliation between two political forces of PPPP and MQM, it is quite unlikely that these killers would ever be exposed.

The veracity of the report of joint intelligence investigations can be well fathomed due to the fact that CID (Crime Investigation Department) has not included the names of any target killers , working as political activists of any party in the fifth edition of Redbook list of most wanted criminals of 2011 target killings of Karachi.

Meanwhile ANP has also submitted its motion against this alleged understanding (DEAL) between PPPP and MQM, while over intense pressure of party leadership, Dr. Zulfiqar Ali Mirza was also forced to visit 90 on ‘goodwill visit’: in the aftermath of which he has been reported to be quite ‘upset’ and thus avoiding media. His previous harsh, volatile statements regarding target killers have been raising quite a storm, mostly due to his uncouth behavior. He has also been known to have tendered his resignation in better interests of PPPP-MQM reconciliation, but was forced to withdraw it. This visit has also been declared as a bulwark of PPPP against any future political threats.

NA-121 Lahore has been in the grip of the PML-N since 1985, but evolving ground realties in the constituency, including the surfacing of the PTI as a new political force and the re-entry of the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) into electoral politics, ensures a tough electoral contest on May 11. In the past three elections, the PML-N and the JI coalition has won this seat. But in the upcoming polls, the ri
On May 19, the residents of NA-250, PS-112 and PS-113 constituencies of Karachi polled their votes afresh in 43 out of 180 polling stations in a relatively peaceful environment ensured by the army. The Election Commission of Pakistan [ECP] postponed polling on May 11 in 43 polling stations of NA-250, PS-112 and PS-113 constituencies due to widespread complaints of rigging and irregularities and
Polling in Balochistan was not as violent as expected – at least on the polling day itself. Though a dozen of people died in attacks of various kinds but things could so easily have been worse in the most troubled of our provinces. Certainly the run-up to the elections had not been encouraging at all, with bomb blasts, targeted killings and other forms of death and terror striking frequently a
The upcoming KP government will be facing over Rs20 billion deficit in the next financial budget, making it almighty difficult for it to run the financial matters of the province because since the caretakers took over at the centre they province was paid less than Rs15 billion from the divisible pool. Similarly, so far the provincial government has not been paid its Rs6 billion share in the net
