Faiza Sheikh beautifully handles all the difficult subjects in a unique style of her own. Her thought provoking works lead viewers to a new understanding of the subject. Her interpretation of the basic issues hit the right cord. Faiza Sheikh is a London-based artist her paintings exhibition titled “Alchemy” at Canvas Art Gallery, Karachi reveals a cluster of 20 artworks having powerful observation and lively interpretation about enlightenment.

She has created a fantasy world of her own I said fantasy as she wants to see an overall perfection in her world which is impossible in reality. But through her world she tries to describe the problems and situations a person experience while living a life in a real world which in a way helps searching answers to unsolved queries always occupy our minds.

With a focus on contemporary techniques she merges the theme and compositions. Her work portrays experiences of her life as surviving among the set rules where she finds herself emotionally immerse to obey her own rules, which has been penetrated in her life tangibly or intangibly. Her work is her own world where she attempts to depict the desires and ideas humbly with the use of unique technique to express her thoughts.

Thoughtful compositions with philosophical messages in bright hues by Faiza Sheikh are compelling. The use of gold and silver leafs enhances the rich texture of her paintings. She also incorporates various elements, animals and characters such as dervishes, monks and damsels to support her poetical, philosophical, economic and political paintings.

She also incorporate various couplets in Persian, Chinese, English, Bengali to support her point of view and help her in conveying the message to the viewer more clearly and deeply.

Overall her paintings show a power supposedly like alchemy the title, especially of enchantment or transformation of human beings into a saintly being far from all evils and sins in her dream world of perfection.

The titles of her oil on canvas paintings also show her emotional attachment to her work which is all about life. “Devotion” “Enchantment”, “Fantasy”, “Love”, “Propriety”, “Journey”, “Tranquillity”, “Shall I Compare Thee to a Summers Day” are some of her titles that divulge into sensitive issues.

In her painting titled “Propriety” she depicts the behaviours of our society where some values are thought appropriate for a decent person. The standards of politeness, respect, decency, or morality conventionally accepted by a society seems prevalent in her works.

Her work involves vibrant hues, bold compositions, striking colours, clear images but dream like structures. Bright colours, depicting the life continue her spiritual journey for sharing her impressions with others through paintings.

Her new style proves her rarity and individuality and is the reason behind her unusual paintings. She creates philosophical work thus touching diverse themes to inspire and challenge and provoke thoughts.

Her work focuses on life which is not real or false, but it is about illusion. Experiences that are part of human existence make life what it is, therefore, life has different meaning for different people.

She conveys various messages regarding this phenomenon. People’s interest and curiosity makes life more interesting and liveable.

She wants the viewers to encounter the challenges in their lives in terms of creativity trying to bring change socio-politically in a society, which can be brought individually and slowly.
