The game of cricket is fast turning into a profitable industry as millions of cricket fans love to see their stars in action in different formats of the game.

India has only recently capitalized on this reality with its IPL going great guns. The credit goes to Lalit Modi, an excellent sports administrator, sharp, brash, ruthlessly ambitious, admired and reviled in equal measure, who decided to introduce some new type of cricket, which is both colorful and exciting to the fans. His enthusiasm changed the landscape of cricket, but when the stage was set, he had to make a controversial exit.

The Indian Premier League, the multi-million-dollar, football-style, franchise-based domestic league, which Modi conceived and executed with spectacular success, has hurtled cricket to the fast lane turning it into a magnificent spectacle.

Modi's rise to the top rung of Indian cricket was as fast as it was stunning. Scion of a leading Indian business family, he began his career as an adversary of the Indian Cricket Board in the early 90s when he was trying to build a business out of distributing sports pay channels. He knew even then that live sports was one of the few things the Indian television consumer would pay for, but soon realised that the best way to beat the system was to join it

He was very happy to see that the franchises had valued the sport and the sportsman in the right spirit, ready to embark upon a new cricketing era.

Next up on Modi’s agenda was the all important IPL players’ auction and his dream was slowly but surely turning into a reality -- a billion-dollar reality as media was slowly beginning to understand the concept of the IPL and it was full steam ahead.

Lalit’s dream comes true when he announces launch of the Indian Premier League (IPL), a league based around Twenty20 format, where each team is limited to batting for a maximum of 20 overs.

The IPL has since grown into one of the world's biggest sports event, worth over $4 billions, and the man behind of the commercial success of the Indian Premier League is Lalit Modi.

The inaugural season of the tournament successfully concluded as during 46 days, 59 matches were played and Rajasthan Royals defeated Chennai Super Kings in a thriller and emerged as the first IPL champions.

Modi, who also became the youngest vice-president of the BCCI, also believed that a franchise structure, similar to the one used in American Professional sports, had significant benefits over centralized ownership.

Modi’s hands show a sense of discipline as he never loses his passion in any circumstances, not even in the face of life threats He has original ideas and a novel approach about how to conclude the story. He has the ability to think and plan.

After conclusion of the first remarkable edition of IPL with the entire country so excited and eagerly awaiting the second edition, BCCI took a decision to shift the IPL out of India to South Africa, but Modi’s efforts stalled this move and he successfully organized the second edition of IPL as well.

The reason to shift the IPL from India was the threats received by Modi from under-world dons. Mumbai Police Additional Commissioner Devan Bharti also confirmed that they had received credible information that there was a plot by Mumbai underworld to have Modi assassinated. This threat came from the multi-million pound illegal gambling mafia that wanted to fix IPL matches, but Modi foiled their plans and unequivocally rejected their advances. As a resulted, Modi was on the hit list of these criminal groups.

Modi, who spent all his energy on establishing a new trend in cricket, did his best to stop match fixing in first two editions of Indian Premier League, but for this he received life-threats.

During the third season of the IPL (from 12 March to 25 April 2010), there was a further increase in threat perception to Lalit Modi, forcing him to get additional high-level security in Mumbai as well as in other states in India which he and his family visited during IPL matches. The Mumbai Police also upgraded their security. The small firearms that the Mumbai Police personnel had been carrying when providing him security were replaced by sub-machine guns. The 32nd floor of the Four Seasons Hotel in Mumbai where Mohi stayed was almost completely sealed off.

Modi also invited a leading security firm to India from UK which assessed the security situation and advised him on the precautions which were required to be taken. They also suggested importing automatic weapons to equip his private security guards, but the Maharashtra Government declined their request to import the security equipment.

Right after conclusion of third edition of the game, BCCI took the wrong decision about suspension of Lalit Modi as chairman of the IPL, which created many questions, more so because suddenly the high-level protection provided to Modi by the Mumbai Police was withdrawn.

Every one knows well that without armed protection in India, it is difficult to fight against the gangsters and under-world dons which also enjoy some political support. Modi then decided to leave India due to security fears and moved to the United Kingdom on the advice of his security firm. Even after spending two years there, Modi and his family are still facing life threats from under-world don, forcing Modi to retain private security cover for his family in London.

Modi, who is the founder of Indian Primer League and an excellent sports administrator with strong ambitions and aims, wants to go back to India and work for his country, but it is ridiculous that no one is ready to give him armed protection. It seems that the Indian government as well as the people have forgotten services of Lalit Modi to both the game and the country.

NA-121 Lahore has been in the grip of the PML-N since 1985, but evolving ground realties in the constituency, including the surfacing of the PTI as a new political force and the re-entry of the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) into electoral politics, ensures a tough electoral contest on May 11. In the past three elections, the PML-N and the JI coalition has won this seat. But in the upcoming polls, the ri

Polling in Balochistan was not as violent as expected – at least on the polling day itself. Though a dozen of people died in attacks of various kinds but things could so easily have been worse in the most troubled of our provinces. Certainly the run-up to the elections had not been encouraging at all, with bomb blasts, targeted killings and other forms of death and terror striking frequently a
