Having interest in art since childhood Shanzay Sabzwari’s paintings are a blend of realism and a little bit of creative power of imagination. While going through her works it seems she loves painting portraits and human figures. Bright images revolve around Mughal era royal female characters in acrylic on canvas by Shanzay in a group show at Grandeur gallery, Karachi.

Currently in her second year of BFA in Fine Art at Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture Shanzay, one of the upcoming young female artists is much fascinated by the bygone Mughal era and her spectacular display of female subjects and choice of bold colours point towards her confidence. Her artistic production reflects her love for traditional values and the traditional symbolism results in beautiful creative artworks.

Shanzay is not only interested in drawing and painting, but comic strip writing as well. Her comics by the name of ‘Teenlife’ were published in a local teen magazine for a span of two years. She illustrated, wrote, inked and penned the comics herself, which were aimed towards the Pakistani youth.

Her paintings convey her feelings that emerge from within. The basic subject of her artworks is women, which holds traditional values. She paints faces with big bright eyes and heavy jewellery. Soft and enlightened female faces unveil emotional and intellectual dilemmas of women. She gives eyes and facial expressions more prominence in her paintings to reveal the emotions rather other body parts. She incorporates heavy jewellery to represent our traditional culture and values. She wants to preserve the individuality of Mughal era.

She explores the journey of woman's life through paintings, based on the conditions and factors of the society especially Mughal era women. The life of a woman is divided into various stages. She passes through different emotions and feelings during her lifetime and wants to express her thoughts and ideas too.

The faces and figures of women describe the part women play in a social context. She manages to bring different moods and situations of women to life. Each painting shows creativity and skilful execution and therefore appealing to the viewer. The paintings shares the moments of sorrow as well as joy trying to focus on every emotional issue of women.

The powerful and bright colours of paintings depict her vibrant and positive mood. She skilfully handles and defines women issues on large and small canvases in bold and beautiful colours giving a strong message of hope and good times.

One of her paintings done in great detail and attention depicts a scene of Indian royalty, inspired by Mughal tradition showing a dancer being watched by two princesses while instrumentalists look on.

Her paintings show her understanding of other women’s feelings and emotions. Her command on design and colour reveals her knowledge about the subjects related to women. Her artistic manifestation of women in dignified expressions indicates her talent. She has a good sense of composition as she plays with colours such as reds, greens, yellow, black and whites in various colour schemes.

The intense warm colours of the figures against the red hot and dark black and green backgrounds and the rhythmical succession of the female faces convey the feelings of emotional attachment to the roots. The introduction of different textures, surfaces, and elements enhances the natural look of her paintings.

She wants traditional values to stay alive. She speaks through colours and female figures in her paintings. Her colour sense, division of spaces, and compositions, all together creates her artworks which bring a breath of fresh air to the art scene of Karachi.
