Athletics: Mutai to defend London title
January 27, 2012
Emmanuel Mutai will defend his Virgin Lon on Marathon title against fellow Kenyan and world record holder Patrick Makau on April 22.
Race organisers confirmed the pair will be among six Kenyans competing just three months out from the Olympics with places on the team for the Games up for grabs.
Mutai, who smashed the London course record to win the 2011 race in two hours four minutes 40 seconds, will also be up against double world champion Abel Kirui, three-time London Marathon champion Martin Lel, Frankfurt champion Wilson Kipsang and Vincent Kipruto, last year's World Championship silver medallist.
Kenyan selectors will name their final three entrants for the Olympic marathon just eight days after the London Marathon.
London Marathon race director David Bedford said: "Last year was an amazing one for Kenyan marathon runners around the world and we are delighted to welcome this hugely talented half dozen to London for the 2012 men's race.
