As line is the fundamental element of expression throughout human history every artist expresses his/her creativity through this simplest way in the form of drawing. Abrar also satisfy his artistic endeavours in his recent series of drawings titled “A Symphony in Line and Ink” at Ocean Art Galleries, Lahore.

During my visit to Lahore I experience a natural, indigenous and instinctive style of Abrar at this exhibition. Achromatic but not dim he draws forms in an utmost simplistic manner and embellishes them with suggestive pen or charcoal strokes that further elaborate his work. The visions embedded in his mind take shape on paper and canvas in the form of drawings. The ideas come from scattered images that take shape on the paper as an alluring woman or a pensive lady.

Usually artists feel reluctant to do drawings as if any mistake occurs it can not hide under colours but Abrar has done drawings on both paper and canvas with charcoal and ink. When I inquired why he chose charcoal for his drawings as it is a difficult medium to handle. He said, “I have experimented ink with charcoal in my drawings and outcome was great.”

He has done drawings in a series of figures which show sequences echoing stories within the drawings. His rendering of figures is different from others. He portrays the feminine form in black, grey and white and uses shades of black, grey with white to glamorize the simplicity of human body structure against a colourless background.

The wide eyed women busy in various chores of daily life can be seen in various situations in the drawings sometimes they are in a veranda, sometimes chatting in a garden, sometimes in a living room talking to a parrot, enjoying music, in pensive mood in front of a mirror and sometimes just gaze at the viewer.

His recent drawings reflect his artistic expressions present in a variety of emotions, representations and themes that are explored during the lifetime of a woman. Culture and life experiences have relationship with what is being drawn.

The human emotions especially of woman are effectively portrayed through black and white drawings, devoid of colours yet attractive. The simple grey, black colour of Ink and charcoal convey his thoughts to the viewer thus sharing the beauty with others.

The drawings show details - the men and women he draws show varying expressions and situations. Shapes and forms with shading are used to bring depth in the work. The marking of lines and areas of tone depict the environment and the complex circumstances he deals with in his work. His sensitive approach towards society enables him to create such drawings using ink and charcoal on paper and canvas.

He highlights the attire and heavy ornaments wear by the women of our region, which gives a deep meaning and understanding to his drawings. Some of the women wearing tehband with kurtas while the others wearing blouses and saris depicting a culture that surrounds us and keep our women intact with our values.

Among the drawings of smiling alluring young women revealing a new world of beauty there are some turban wearing men with grim faces in deep thoughts. The feminine beauty and strength both speaks of a desire for appreciation, admiration and love in his work.

NA-121 Lahore has been in the grip of the PML-N since 1985, but evolving ground realties in the constituency, including the surfacing of the PTI as a new political force and the re-entry of the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) into electoral politics, ensures a tough electoral contest on May 11. In the past three elections, the PML-N and the JI coalition has won this seat. But in the upcoming polls, the ri
On May 19, the residents of NA-250, PS-112 and PS-113 constituencies of Karachi polled their votes afresh in 43 out of 180 polling stations in a relatively peaceful environment ensured by the army. The Election Commission of Pakistan [ECP] postponed polling on May 11 in 43 polling stations of NA-250, PS-112 and PS-113 constituencies due to widespread complaints of rigging and irregularities and
Polling in Balochistan was not as violent as expected – at least on the polling day itself. Though a dozen of people died in attacks of various kinds but things could so easily have been worse in the most troubled of our provinces. Certainly the run-up to the elections had not been encouraging at all, with bomb blasts, targeted killings and other forms of death and terror striking frequently a
The upcoming KP government will be facing over Rs20 billion deficit in the next financial budget, making it almighty difficult for it to run the financial matters of the province because since the caretakers took over at the centre they province was paid less than Rs15 billion from the divisible pool.
