Magsi lashes out over the Balochistan situation
January 27, 2012
Balochistan Governor NawabZulfiqar Ali Magsiexpressing concern over the worsening law and order situation in the province, said that it was the responsibility of the provincial government to improve security to the satisfaction of the people.
The statement of the governor came at a time when Chief Minister Balochistan has not been in Quetta for the last six weeks and is in Islamabad.
Talking to media after addressing the 10th convocation of the Balochistan University Governor Balochistan said, “I have been saying this from the very first day that law and order is very poor in the province. It makes no difference whether I am satisfied or not, but this question should be asked from the people.”
He said that forced disappearances of political workers and recovery of their bullet-riddled bodies was not a good act.
“Collective efforts are needed to improve the law and order situation in Balochistan,” said Magsi.
He said: “As a governor I believe that the elected members of provincial parliament are responsible for this worsening law and order situation since they are not playing a positive role in retaining durable peace. Merely expressing helplessness or inability is not a solution,” Magsi said.
He said that the sincerity and honesty of the provincial ministers could be judged by the fact that only one out of over 50 ministers turned up to attend the convocation of this premier institution of Balochistan. It would be appropriate if the chief minister had been asked the relevant questions about the performance of his cabinet members and interest of his cabinet colleagues on this subject, he said.
He said that all segments of the society should realise their responsibilities for improving the situation in Balochistan. Responding to a question about performance of the provincial government, Magsi said his satisfaction or dissatisfaction over government’s performance would not make any difference. “The people should ask from their representatives about government’s performance,” he remarked. When his attention was drawn towards forced disappearance of political workers and recovery of decomposed bodies of Baloch missing persons, governor said what was happing was wrong, if there was any charge against anyone, cases should be registered against him and he should be handed over to police after registration of case. To yet another query about increase in incidents of kidnapping for ransom, Magsi said people needed money and there would be an increase in such incidents.
“It is utterly wrong that mutilated bodies are thrown at public places on daily basis. If the victims were involved in crimes, cases must be registered against them. They should be tried in courts according to the constitution and laws of the land,” he said, adding that he raised this issue with authorities and it must be stopped immediately.
On a question, he said that law and order situation in this region deteriorated after the assassination of Nawab Akbar Bugti. It was the beginning point, he added.
Responding to another question about the sudden rise in cases of kidnapping for ransom in the province, the governor said that unemployed and greedy people were involved in crime.
His remarks generated usual heat and interest as Magsi proved his political presence on the political scene with an eye on the future elections.
Senior Vice President of National Party Senator Mir HasilBazenjo said the rulers have left the people at the mercy of anti state elements. The incumbent rulers are incapable to solve the problems of Balochistan. The lawlessness is increasing day by day. Even the security agencies accept that more than 70 gangs are involved in such incidents and none of the members of these gangs have been arrested.
He said members of three foreign NGOs have been abducted and no serious efforts have been made for their recovery, due to which many organisations are facing insecurity. The law enforcing agencies have completely failed. FC itself has said that it is busy in fighting insurgency and cannot act against any other criminal activity.
Under these circumstances how can one hope for any improvement in the situation. He said that the rulers should stop hiding their incompetency and should admit their shortfalls.
Head of Rind Tribe and opposition member in the provincial assembly SardarYar Mohammad Rind announced a fund for the BalochistanUniversity and Khuzdar Engineering University from his MPA.
Rind said, Governor Magsisentiments regarding educational decline and other problems in Balochistan are based on facts and the provincial govt is deliberately trying to sweep the problems of Balochistan under the carpet. The deaf and mute government is least bothered with the problems of the people. Every MPA is provided RS 270 million every year for development projects. However no one, with his exception, spends a single penny on the public.
However analysts say that Rind’s announcement of providing funds is of no significance as he has not even gotten any funds. If he had gotten some funds, maybe than, he also would not have been so interested in the education and development of Balochistan.
