According to the unofficial statistics, Karachi, the provincial capital of Sindh has been witnessed as the top ranked in violence and terror hit activities during the year of 2011.
The statistics revealed that in view of escalating number of terrorist attacks, deteriorating security situation and violence engulfed the Karachi city after 15 years. The unofficial record explains that 1,742 people have been killed in 2011while official statistics claimed that 1,230 people have been targeted. Seventeen bomb blasts and 21 hand grenade blasts have been recorded.
Street crimes and plundering activities were on full swing throughout the year. 11,930 mobile phones were stolen while 9763 were snatched, 1520 citizens had lost their vehicles while 2913 vehicles were snatched. Meanwhile, 16,968 motorcycles were snatched throughout the year of 2011.
Moreover, criminals successfully looted more than Rs 100 million in 22 bank dacoities, however, police only verbally claimed of arresting dacoits and recovered looted money. The unofficial record explained that 157 vehicles were set on fire during protests and violence activities.
Police and Crime Investigation Department (CID) in various raids and police encounters made arrest of 8,593 offenders and eradicated 691 groups while during police encounters 65 criminals were killed.
Furthermore, police recovered heavy ammunition including 7-LLMGs, 165 Kalashnikovs, 164 Rifles¸ 219 Short guns, 5834 Pistols, Revolvers and Mousers, 14 Rocket Launchers, 450 Hand Grenades and 317 gram explosive material from the arrested criminals.
Planted bombs and hand grenades claimed lives of 68 persons while more than 250 innocents were injured in 2011.
Terrorists attacked on Mehran base in which two P-3C Orion, maritime patrol aircraft, were destroyed while three naval buses were torched in separate terrorist activities.
According to the police record, overall 17 bomb blast and 21 hand grenade were recorded in 2011. Whereas, several times law enforcement agencies were also targeted.
As many as 157 claims of burnt vehicles have been filed of which 33 were buses, 89 mini buses and 35 were coaches. According to the available data, 24 claims for burnt vehicles were made in January, 11 in February, 27 in March, nine in April, 10 in May, 13 in June, 34 in July, 31 in August, seven each in September and October, nine in November and three in December.
It is worth mentioning here that mostly vehicles were burnt in the strike against former Sindh Home Minister, Zulfiqar Mirza. Transporters also informed that more than 2147 vehicles have been burnt-out since December 27, 2007, the assassination day of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto.
The year of 2011 very unkind to the banks as dacoits looted billion more than Rs 100 million during the 22 incidents. Apart from making tall claims, the police did not show any commendable performance in recovering the looted amounts.
Only ten days after start of 2011, three dacoits fled away after looting Rs 1.162 million from a private bank, situated in Nazimabad. A couple of bank robbery incidents were reported on January 20, in Shah Latif Town, but were foiled by the security agencies. However, police only managed to arrest a single culprit.
On March 5, four robbers looted Rs 3.3 million from a private bank, situated in Saeed Abad. Police showed competence and arrested one person and recovered only Rs 0.25 million from his possession.
In another incident, unknown dacoits in Karachi looted Rs 6.2 million from another bank on March 17 while a security guard of a private bank robbed Rs 9.0 million in Khardar area. He was fled away from the incident along with five other associates and police failed to get any clue in this regard.
Unidentified armed men looted Rs 3.3 million from a bank situated in Korangi Industrial Area, however, they two of total four robbers were being apprehended at the same night. These incidents were a mere reflection of the law and order situation in the city where not a single month was spare from bank robberies.
The last six months of the year was also reported by similar bank looting incidents where people on gun point robbed millions of rupees from private banks. Police was of the opinion that untrained security guards non-implementation of rules set by the State of Pakistan.
