A court of a judicial magistrate has issued arrest warrants for former president Pervez Musharraf and former prime minister Shaukat Aziz over the killing of Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti.

Earlier, Balochistan police had sought the arrest warrants of the previous government biggies from the court of a judicial magistrate in the murder case of Baloch leader Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti, who was assassinated in a military operation on August, 26, 2006, in the mountainous Bhamboor Range in Kohlu district following two days long battle.

After denial by police to lodge any complaint of the family, Balochistan High Court had directed the police to register an FIR against the nominated persons. A case was registered in Dera Bugti town in October, 2009 on the application of his son Jameel Akbar Bugti against former president Pervez Musharraf, ex- prime minister Shaukat Aziz, former Balochistan governor Owais Ghani, ex-chief minister Jam Mohammad Yousaf, the then interior minister Aftab Ahmad Sherpao and home minister Mir Shoaib Nosherwani.

The court has already issued the arrest warrants for former provincial home minister Shoaib Nosherwani. However, written statements by three accused, Sherpao, Jam and Owais Ghani, were submitted before BHC, stating that since they were part and parcel of civilian setup and operation was launched by army, so they had nothing to do with the killing of Nawab Akbar Bugti.

The arrest warrants were issued by the court of judicial magistrate VI Faisal Hameed on the request of CID. The BHC has been expressing its displeasure over the slow pace of progress in murder case of Baloch leader. The court will again hear the case on November 1.

Bugti was killed along with his 35 comrades in a military action on August 26, 2006, near Kohlu and Bugti tribal territory. The crime branch investigating the case requested Judicial Magistrate-VI Faisal Hameed to issue the arrest warrants. The crime branch had earlier obtained arrest warrants for former home minister and sitting member of the Provincial Assembly Shoaib Ahmed Nosherwani.

Nawabzada Jamil Bugti, the eldest surviving son of Bugti, had registered an FIR at the Dera Bugti police station against Musharraf, Shaukat Aziz, Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao, former governor of Balochistan Owais Ahmed Ghani, former chief minister Jam Muhammad Yousaf and then home minister of Balochistan Shoaib Ahmed Nosherwani. He held them all responsible for his father’s murder.

The police registered the FIR following the directives of the Balochistan High Court (BHC), as they had earlier refused to register a case against the former dictator and the other political figures.

Sherpao and Ghani had submitted a reply before the BHC saying that since they were part of the civilian set-up, and the operation was launched by the army, they had nothing to do with Bugti’s killing. They also assured complete cooperation with the investigation team.

The Balochistan government had earlier requested the federal government to extradite Musharraf, but the federal government had asked for his arrest warrant as required by Interpol in order to issue red warrants to nab fugitives.

Nawab Akbar Bugti was the leader of an armed campaign for provincial autonomy in Balochistan. He was also calling for a greater share of the profits gained from the natural resources of Pakistan's largest province, located in the southwest of the country. This is not the first time Musharraf is accused of having a hand in the death of a political rival. Earlier this year, another warrant was issued for his arrest over the 2007 assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

Musharraf was accused of not providing Ms. Bhutto with adequate security for her return to run in the nation's parliamentary elections.

Talking exclusively, Nawab Jamil Bugti said the powers which are responsible for deteriorating the provincial affairs must bring change in their attitude. Illegal abductions, recovery of mutilated and bullet-riddled dead bodies from different parts of the province won’t lead us to peace till we try to stop such heinous acts of the foreign forces.

On 20th October, 2011, Balochistan Government established a six-member investigating committee to probe into the murder case of Muhammad Akbar Bugti. The committee headed by Director General Crime would present its report to provincial government in a month’s span.

SP CID, Deputy Commissioner Kohlu, Deputy Commissioner Dera Bugti and Deputy Commissioner Sibbi would be part of the investigative committee.

It is pertinent to mention here that Nawab Jamil Bugti’s constitutional petition regarding Akbar Bugti is still under review of Balochistan High Court. Jamil Bugti held Pervez Musharraf, Shaukat Aziz, Aftab Ahmed Sherpao, Owais Ahmed Ghani, Jam Muhammad Yousaf, and Mir Shoaib Nosherwani responsible to his father’s murderer in his First Information Report.

While denying to accept the investigative committee formulated by government, Jamil Bugti, Talal Bugti and other Baloch leaders said the government was trying to safeguard those responsible and it is quite strange to form a committee to investigate the matter which is pending with court. It is a step to affect the upcoming decision of the court. Government isn’t sincere to bring the murderers to justice. Some sections are of the opinion that the present democratic and political government must take solid steps to bring murderers of Akbar Bugti to justice.

It is the need of the hour that present regime showed seriousness to the matters being faced by the Baloch people, otherwise dream of peace, stability and progress won’t become a reality ever.

NA-121 Lahore has been in the grip of the PML-N since 1985, but evolving ground realties in the constituency, including the surfacing of the PTI as a new political force and the re-entry of the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) into electoral politics, ensures a tough electoral contest on May 11. In the past three elections, the PML-N and the JI coalition has won this seat. But in the upcoming polls, the ri
