Immediately after the attack numerous western news outlets and commentators initially blamed the Norway attack on Islamic militants. British newspaper, The Sun, ran a front-page headline titled, "Al Qaeda’s" Massacre, Norway’s 9/11.” The Wall Street Journal also initially blamed “jidhadists” reporting that, “Norway is targeted for being true to Western norms." Erik Erickson of FOX Radio said that he believed it was a Muslim terrorist who did the deed. When all the facts came to light, the same Western media changed its tone. All of a sudden Breivik was called an “Assailant” (Reuters), “Gunman” (BBC, CNN, AP). The US Department of State called it an “Act of Violence” and not an “Act of Terrorism’.
The terror attack in Norway sent shock waves not only in this scenically peaceful Scandinavian nation but also throughout the Western world. The attack was the deadliest attack in the country since World War II. It was also the third deadliest attack after 1995 Oklahoma City bombings and 9/11 to take place in the western world.

The attacks were well planned. In the car bomb explosion outside the office of Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg in Oslo, eight people were killed and several others wounded, with more than 10 people critically injured. The second attack occurred at the Labour Party’s youth camp on the island of Utøya in which 69 people lost their lives.

The 32 years old Anders Behring Breivik who carried out these attacks in his home country said that he is “anti-Islam” and the attacks were meant to demonstrate his deep hatred for Islam. In his A European Declaration of Independence, he highlights his “xenophobic worldview, which includes support for varying degrees of cultural conservatism,” anti-Islamisation, far-right Zionism and Serbian paramilitarism, and for the violent annihilation of Islam.

Unknowingly Breivik has, in fact, shown his deep love for Islam! His killing of fellow Christians in a predominantly Christian country reflects this affinity for Islam. He has unwittingly done not just one but two great services to Islam. First, by exposing Western hypocrisy and second, by removing the label of ‘terrorism” and “terrorists’ from Islam and Muslims.

First we will talk about Western hypocrisy.

The tag of “Terrorist” is just reserved exclusively for the Muslims! This is further highlighted by this short story: Once a man was walking in Central Park when he saw a vicious dog attacking an old lady. The man ran over and kicked the dog and it died. The next day newspapers across New York broke the gallant efforts of the young man. Banner headline stated: “LOCAL HERO SAVES LADY FROM DOG.” The man wanting to set the record straight said, “I am not American.” The next day headlines changed to: FOREIGNER SAVES LADY FROM DOG.” Again the man said, “Actually I am a Pakistani.” Once again the headlines changed to: “MUSLIM TERRORIST KILLS INNOCENT DOG.”

And now to Breivik’s love for Islam. If he is really anti-Islam then he would have targeted Muslims and not Christians. Post 9/11 anti-Muslim Westerns, unlike Breivik, did not express their anti-Islamic emotions by attacking Christians or desecrating the church. They carried out attacks against Muslims. Pastor Terry Jones of Florida who burnt the Holy Quran and Kurt Westergaard the Danish cartoonist who drew the caricatures of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) under the guise of “freedom of expression” were anti-Islamic. Breivik is not anti-Islam.

Germany, during the reign of Hitler was anti-Jewish. The holocaust manifests this point. During this time, Jews in Europe were subjected to progressively harsh persecution that ultimately led to the murder of 6,000,000 Jews (1.5 million of these being children) and the destruction of 5,000 Jewish communities. The Jews who died were the victims of Germany's deliberate and systematic attempt to annihilate the entire Jewish population of Europe, a plan Hitler called the “Final Solution” (Endlosung).

Anti-Islamic fundamentalists, hate-mongers and demagogueries like Dr Robert Morey, Dr Anis Shorroush, Rev. Pat Robertson, Rev. Billy Graham, Prof. Sam Huntington, Prof. Daniel Pipes, George Bush, Tony Blair and many others should remove their rose coloured glasses and view Islam as a religion that promotes love, brotherhood and peace. They should thank Breivik for opening their eyes.

Islam advocates “peace” and the Muslim greeting of “Assalam-o-alaikum” literally means "peace be on you". A true Muslim would never stoop down so low as to kill his fellow Muslims and innocent people, especially women and children. Even when a Muslim leaves for jihad, leaving behind his home and family, he adheres to the strict rules and regulations related to jihad.

The Holy Qur'an observes: "And fight in the way of Allah against those who fight against you and transgress not the limits. Verily Allah loves not the transgressors" (2: 190).

The Holy Prophet (PBUH) has given clear instructions about the behaviour of the Muslim army. He observed: "Set out for Jihad in the name of Allah and for the sake of Allah. Do not lay hands on the old verging on death, on women, children and babes. Do not steal anything from the booty and collect together all that falls to your lot in the battlefield and do good for Allah loves the virtuous and the pious." (Bukhari). So great is the respect for humanly feelings in Islam that even the wanton destruction of enemy's crops or property is strictly forbidden.

In no part of the Qur'an does Allah command believers to "respond to violence with violence". On the contrary, Allah commands Muslims to "respond to evil with goodness": A good action and a bad action are not the same. Repel the bad with something better and, if there is enmity between you and someone else, he will be like a bosom friend. (Surat al-Fussilat: 34)

It is no doubt a legitimate right of Muslims to react against cruelty. However, these reactions should never turn into a blind hatred, an unjust enmity. God warns about this in the following verse: "... Do not let hatred for a people who debar you from the Masjid al-Haram incite you into going beyond the limits. Help each other to goodness and heedfulness. Do not help each other to wrongdoing and enmity. Heed God Allah (alone)..." (Surat al-Ma'ida: 2)

Consequently, carrying out terrorist acts under the pretence of "representing the oppressed nations of the world", against the innocent people of other nations is by no means compatible with Islam.

Those who are accused of killing innocent people, including women and children, are not Muslims. They are atheists, communists and brain washed paid cons like Raymond Davis. Majority of them are Western moles out to defame Islam, like the FBI's synagogue bomb plot. At the trial last month, Judge Colleen McMahon explained, "no one except the government instigated, planned and brought [the plot] to fruition."

This case was American government’s invention. All four were accused of planning to bomb the Riverdale Temple in the Bronx as well as the nearby Riverdale Jewish Center, in May 2009. The men in question did not agree to carry out the crime due to ideology. They had no allegiance to, or even knowledge, of the terrorist group Jaish-i-Mohammed, in whose name they allegedly acted. They were not motivated to criminal behaviour by their allegiance to Allah. They were motivated, purely and simply, by money.

The West should also wake up and realise that there are hardcore Christian fundamentalists in their own ranks also: Timothy McVeigh of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, The Olympic Park Bomber, Eric Robert Rudolph, is most well known as the perpetrator of Centennial Olympic Park bombing in Atlanta which occurred on July 27, 1996, during the 1996 Summer Olympics. The blast killed spectator Alice Hawthorne and wounded 111 others. He is also responsible for a series of bombings across the southern United States between 1996 and 1998.

The Western world should take a trip down memory lane and recall the barbaric period of the Crusaders. Crusaders were European Christians who undertook the expeditions at the end of the 11th century to recover the Holy Land (the area around Palestine) from the Muslims. They set out with a so-called religious goal, yet they laid waste each acre of land they entered with fear and violence. They subjected civilians to mass executions and plundered many villages and towns.

Their conquest of Jerusalem, where Muslims, Jews and Christians lived under Islamic rule in peace, became the scene of immense bloodshed. They violently killed all Muslims and Jews. The Crusaders' barbarism was so excessive that, during the Fourth Crusade, they plundered Istanbul, also a Christian city, and stole the golden objects from the churches.

The West has failed to understand the essence of Islam. They try to make Islam, essentially a religion of peace and justice, a tool of barbarism, which is simply an outcome of their social and cultural structure. It is a fact that, for the last few centuries, Muslims in all corners of the Islamic world are being subjected to violence by Western forces and their affiliates. The colonialist European states, local oppressive regimes or colonialists backed by the West (Israel, for instance) caused great suffering for Muslims at large.

"Islamic terror" is quite an erroneous concept which contradicts Islam's message. That is because; the religion of Islam can by no means concur with terror. On the contrary, Muslims are responsible for preventing terrorist acts and bringing peace and justice to the world.
