Almost all the major political parties of Balochistan have decided to launch a joint movement by holding protest rallies and public meetings to press the government stop ‘target killings’, and check incidents of kidnapping for ransom and highway holdups.

Addressing a joint press conference at the Quetta Press Club on January 11, Dr Jehanzeb Jamaldini of the Balochistan National Party (BNP) gave the details of the decisions of the All Parties Coordination Committee (APCC), claiming that the law and order situation was going from bad to worse because of the incompetent government in the province.

All the leaders agreed that the military operation in Balochistan seemed to be launched to intimidate the political opponents of the government.

The APCC had been formed during the recently held all-parties conference in order to launch a joint strategy to restore peace in Balochistan.

The leaders of several political parties including, BNP Acting President Dr Jehanzeb Jamaldini, Dr Ishaq Baloch of the National Party (NP), Abdul Rauf Lala of the Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PMAP), Abdul Mateen Akhwandzada of the Jamaat-e-Islami, Abdul Malik Panezai of the Awami National Party (ANP), Abdul Khaliq Hazara of the Hazara Democratic Party (HDP), Qasim Khan of the Tehreek-e-Insaaf, Attahullah of the Balochistan Bar Association and Rahim Kakar of the Anjuman-e-Tajran were present on the occasion.

The party leaders alleged that the government and its functionaries were involved in extra-judicial arrests and killings, mainly of political activists and leaders opposed to the government.

They said the recovery of bullet-riddled bodies, targeted killings of innocent people belonging to Baloch, Pashtun and other ethnic communities were on the rise. They alleged that the security forces, instead of taking action against the culprits involved in these heinous crimes violated the sanctity of homes by carrying out arbitrary raids.

They criticized the government and the law enforcement agencies for their failure to maintain peace and giving the criminals a free hand only to harass innocent people.

Dr. Jehanzeb Jamaldini claimed that it was a pre-planned conspiracy hatched against Balochistan and its people to create differences among them by encouraging criminal activities and targeted killings of political leaders and activists.

The APCC condemned all the inhuman acts of targeted killings whether it was being carried out against Baloch, Pashtun or any other community.

Jamaldini said the APCC would launch a political struggle against the state terrorism and to create awareness among the masses by carrying out rallies, holding seminars, mass gatherings and calling for shutter down or wheel-jam strikes more often.

He questioned the silence of the government on the killing innocent people in custody.

They said that there is consensus among the people and that is the reason behind that new political parties are emerging in the province every month. But unfortunately this pleasure turns into depression very soon due to the existing circumstances of Balochistan.

Geographically, Balochistan is the largest province of Pakistan and due to this lots of political parties are appearing in the province with each passing day, however the sense of insecurity, deprivation and hopelessness among them are more than the varieties of political parties because the issue of Balochistan is the issue of appearance of a new political party or new emergence, however this is the issue of changing the so called existing political culture of the province.

A common Baloch man is not against the political processions and political demands, but they have reservations over their political allies, performance of the party, activation, ideological traditions and priorities. Similarly, Baloch people are not concerned with federalism and provincionalism but are much concerned with political strategy, democratic struggle, and truth about in aims and protection of joint interest.

In the meantime, if the present political parties’ coordination committees would not make gigantic struggles to bring change in political culture than it could not be durable and would not redress the problems confronted by the masses thick and thin.

NA-121 Lahore has been in the grip of the PML-N since 1985, but evolving ground realties in the constituency, including the surfacing of the PTI as a new political force and the re-entry of the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) into electoral politics, ensures a tough electoral contest on May 11. In the past three elections, the PML-N and the JI coalition has won this seat. But in the upcoming polls, the ri
On May 19, the residents of NA-250, PS-112 and PS-113 constituencies of Karachi polled their votes afresh in 43 out of 180 polling stations in a relatively peaceful environment ensured by the army. The Election Commission of Pakistan [ECP] postponed polling on May 11 in 43 polling stations of NA-250, PS-112 and PS-113 constituencies due to widespread complaints of rigging and irregularities and
Polling in Balochistan was not as violent as expected – at least on the polling day itself. Though a dozen of people died in attacks of various kinds but things could so easily have been worse in the most troubled of our provinces. Certainly the run-up to the elections had not been encouraging at all, with bomb blasts, targeted killings and other forms of death and terror striking frequently a
The upcoming KP government will be facing over Rs20 billion deficit in the next financial budget, making it almighty difficult for it to run the financial matters of the province because since the caretakers took over at the centre they province was paid less than Rs15 billion from the divisible pool. Similarly, so far the provincial government has not been paid its Rs6 billion share in the net
